Banaue Rice Terraces: The Eighth Wonder of the World
Carved into the mountains of Ifugao, the Banaue Rice Terraces are the main tourist attraction in the province. The rice terraces are believed to have been hand-carved nearly 2000 years ago, and they are a spectacular tribute to the engineering genius of the ancestors of Philippines; indigenous people. Rising nearly 5000 feet above sea level, the rice terraces offer breathtaking views from a distance, and the pure efficiency of the ancient irrigation system from the rainforest is still a wonder to behold. To this day, locals continue to plant vegetables and rice on the terraces.

Life in the Philippines
As one of Asia’s emerging markets, the Philippines is poised to become a major player in the international world of finance and commerce. It’s already a leading travel destination, especially among beach enthusiasts, for the gleaming white sands and tranquil coastlines produce a natural beauty that compares with the most revered beaches in Thailand and Bora Bora. The island of Boracay, though recently closed for infrastructure improvements, was named “Best Island in the World” by Travel + Leisure magazine in 2012.
For recreation, the Philippines offers an abundance of activities for the adventurous visitor: scuba diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, parasailing, cliff diving, rock climbing. The incredible biodiversity of the archipelago from the rainforest to the mountains to the seas, makes the Philippines one of the most unique destinations in Asia. As the economy continues its transformation from agriculture to manufacturing and service, the country will continue to grow in prominence, and Goldman Sachs included the Philippines in “The Next Eleven”; its list of countries that have the potential to become the largest economies in the world in the 21st century.
The Philippines is located near the “Ring of Fire”; the volcanic area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean, and all that volcanic activity has enriched the Philippines with incredible amounts of mineral deposits. Those deposits are used to provide geothermal power to the islands--nearly 18% of the electricity in the Philippines comes from geothermal power, making the Philippines the second largest geothermal producer in the world (behind the U.S.) Another surprising fact from a country that continues to surprise.
